Unfortunately, there is no magic potion or formula and no perfect way to prepare. All interviews are unique and depend very much on the skills and demands of the job role. The format of each interview can vary, too: some interviews are one-to-one,
some have a few interviewers (a panel interview), and some are group interviews which may also include a group exercise (where interviewers observe the way candidates work together). During the interview you may also need to present to
a panel or do a short test before your interview.
Don’t worry, though – most interviewers will let you know beforehand if they’d like you to take part in any presentations, tests or group discussions. Whatever the format of your interview, you should always prepare yourself for the process.
If you do the groundwork, you’ll feel more confident and perform better at interview than someone who relies on a “spur-of-the-moment” approach.
While no two interviews are the same, every employer will want to find out whether:
- you have the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job
- your experience indicates that you can use these skills successfully
- you have the right personality to do the job and if you would fit into their organisation.
It’s important to keep these points in mind when you’re preparing for the interview, and during the interview itself.
How to prepare for a Face-to-Face Interview
- Make sure you know where you are going prior to the day of the interview.
- Check all your equipment is working and have paper copy back ups if you are required to present during the interview.
- Shower and wear clean smart clothing!
- Remember, the interview begins the moment you walk through the door. Greet the receptionist politely and warmly as they may be asked to give their impression of you.
How to prepare for an Online Interview
Generally preparing for the interview is the same as for a face-to-face interview. However, there are a few more points to consider.
- Only commit to an online interview if you will be able to have a quiet area with no disruptions for the duration of the interview. If you need to ask for a different interview day or time to be able to have a quiet area, please ask for this.
- If you do not have access to video conferencing discuss holding a telephone conference call or offer alternative Video conferencing software.
- You will need to use the guidance provided to set up the video conferencing interview or telephone conference call. You may need to download an app to enable you to participate in the interview. The common video conferencing platforms used are
Skype, WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams and Google Chat.
Test the connection before the interview.
If you have a need for any adjustment due to a disability, please ask for this in advance of the interview.
